I Feel My Savior's Love

This is what our primary president & I strongly felt our primary should learn. Strongly. As in we-both-get-goose-bumps-every-time-we-listen-to-it strongly. A couple of weeks ago I searched for a different arrangement than the one in the Children's Songbook and found it here. I purchased it on the chance it would be what I was looking for. JACKPOT!! It is written lower than the original which is ALWAYS a plus. It has all 4 verses. It has one key change and a simple additional ending. And to top it off, verses 2 & 4 have slightly different rhythm patterns than verses 1 & 3. Same thing with the choruses. Verses 1 & 3 along with the chorus are just like the Children's Songbook. The accompaniment is easy, too.  You can listen to the first bit when you go to the link I provided.  You can also look at the first page to check out the accompaniment level.

I have made a flip chart with key words and have uploaded on scrbd. There are 4 pages per verse plus 4 for the chorus. I will be using the Raindrops & Rainbows to teach the rhythm differences of verses 1 & 2. I will be having a small group sing the 1st & 3rd verses for the program and the entire primary will sing all the choruses and the 2nd & 4th verses.  So I will focus mainly on those & leave the small groups to memorize their parts on their own.

Build An Ark & When I Am Baptized

In my last post, I mentioned that I'm teaching my primary the song "Build An Ark" for the month of February.  I was contacted via email by Mary Judy who taught this song to her primary last year.  She has graciously offered all of her visuals to share with you on my blog.

I have copied and pasted the following email from Mary that explains what she did for both "Build An Ark" and "When I Am Baptized" (which is a program song this year):

We sang "Build an Ark" in our program last year and it was one of my kids favorites. I made a flip chart that I would love to share with anyone interested. I also downloaded both versions of the music files (singing/accompaniment). I am attaching the sheet music, too. We also, sang "When I am Baptized."

For one of our reviews I brought a yellow umbrella and put laminated raindrops on it that matched the flip chart phrases. When I taught "When I am Baptized" I made rainbow ribbon wands for our primary. I did not give them as gifts but kept them so we could use them many times. I would choose a child to lead the music with me and all the other children followed our patterns. We would make large rainbows over our head or figure eights and then when we came to the fermata  on the word "Can" we would point our wands to the floor and twirl it in a spiral like a large whirlpool. We talked about how reverent the song is and that our wands should be reverent (no loud snapping noises). I bought dowels at Lowes or Home Depot and they chopped them for me. I bought fishing swivels at Walmart that I inserted into the dowel then tied the ribbon through. We will use them again this year. We did not use them in the Sacrament Program. I also brought a large rainstick that my friend gave me. I would let a child turn it over very slowly to make the rain sound. Chimes are also nice.

As a Child of God

Happy New Year!

On to a new year of primary program songs!  This month's song is "As a Child of God" by Janice Kapp Perry.  It's in the outline on page 28.  It's a simple song for many reasons:  

1- it's short.  (Compared to last years' January song anyway.)  

2- The chorus is just over half of the length of the song.  

3- The 3 verses are short.  

4- The melody flows beautifully.

I'm sure there's more reasons that can be listed, but I'll stop there.  

I don't know about your primary, but every first Sunday of the year for ours is a bit chaotic.  Everyone is meeting their new teacher & finding their new classrooms.  New Sunbeams become traumatized at the realization that Nursery no longer is their classroom and strive to be brave.  Naturally, Singing & Sharing Time tend to be a bit shorter.  There are 5 Sundays this month, so that will help in planning how to teach this song.  But for tomorrow, my plan is just to introduce the first verse & chorus to them.  I have made a flip chart for all 3 verses & chorus and have posted it on my scribd account for you.

I have also made the chorus pictures onto Vellum Paper (Walmart, who knew?) in the 4x6 picture size.  I put them into a simple 3 frame collage frame I bought for $3 at Walmart.  I cut the entire backing of the frame off & taped each vellum picture to the glass (which doesn't come out anyway).

For the "I receive special light:" portion, I downloaded a kaleidoscope image & printed it onto the Vellum Paper as well.  I didn't do this image as part of the flip chart, though.  Just for this project.  The can of finish you see is simply to hold up the frame while I shine the flashlight & take pictures:)

Once the 3 Vellum pictures are in the frame, I'll shine a flashlight from behind each picture as I sing (Christ & child, special light, baptism) the chorus.  I will place verse 1  of my flip chart on the board.  I'll shine the flashlight on them as I sing, then move it to shine from behind the framed chorus Vellum pictures I'll have in my other hand. 

Simple enough, huh?  But you can just use the flip chart pages for the chorus, too and still use the flashlight to shine on each picture as you sing.  Have the kids take turns with the flashlight as they sing.  I think they'll like it!

Christmas Songs Flip Charts

I have been making Christmas song flip charts, too!  I LOVE Christmas music:)  I make myself wait until the day after Halloween to load up my stereo.  I actually made it to November 3rd this year!

Our Christmas Story Tree By Jan Pinborough & Michael F. Moody was published in The Friend Magazine, December 2010.  There is even an mp3 of it!  I started teaching it to the Sr. Primary just this last week.  I have a 32 inch fake Christmas tree.  I found little ornaments at Walmart for about $2 for each kind (angels, silver stars, red packages).  I already had mini candy canes that we use every year on our family Christmas tree.  To introduce the song, I sang it to them as I decorated the tree according to the words in the song.  With the parts of the song that told what the ornaments represented, I used those specific flip chart pages & placed them on the chalk board.  Once I made it through the song, we discussed what the ornaments represent.  By the end of our discussion, all of the flip chart pages were up on the board.  Then I chose someone to come up and add another set of ornaments as we sang the song together.  I had 4 sets of each ornament total.

Lullaby, Little One By Larry A. Allred was published in The Friend Magazine in December of 1999.  I have been torn between teaching the primary this song or "Our Christmas Story Tree"!  If I hadn't taken the time to teach them those Thanksgiving songs, I would be able to teach them both.  BUT, it's not very often they get to learn a new Thanksgiving song & they loved it!  So this is on my list for next year & I already have the flip chart finished:)  I'm such an over achiever!  This Lullaby, Little One song is a beautiful song & I still find myself humming it as I go about my day.

Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus pg. 38 in the Children's Songbook is always a favorite!

The Shepherd's Carol pg. 40b in the Children's Songbook is short and fun to sing.  This can be sung in a round, up to 4 groups.  I don't like how "mushy" is sounds with all 4 groups singing, so I only do 2.

The Nativity Song pg. 52 in the Children's Songbook is great!  It is a LONG one, though.  But you just can't leave out any of the verses without it feeling incomplete.  We sang this one last year. Instead of having all of the kids learn all of the verses, I split them up.

On the first flip chart page of their assigned verse, I placed a bright piece of paper that had a picture to represent their classes (Jr. was a smiling sun for the Sunbeams and a CTR shield for the older classes) or I just wrote their class name (Sr. Valiant Girls or Boys).  If ALL kids were to sing, I had an "ALL" sign that even the Jr. Primary kids understood.  This was enough for the kids to know when it was their turn to sing & they could see exactly what they were to be singing.  When we came to a class part that wasn't currently in our Singing Time (we do separate Jr. & Sr. singing/sharing times), it was the teachers' job to sing so that the kids could practice NOT singing when it wasn't their turn.  It worked great & by the time they sang in Sacrament Meeting they did a wonderful job!

So this is how I split up the song:
Verse 1:  ALL
Verse 2: Valiant Girls
Verse 3: Jr. Primary
Verse 4: Valiant Boys
Verse 5: ALL

If you have a larger primary, you can further split the verses into "a" and "b" parts.  The "a" parts would be the first 2 lines of the verse and the "b" parts would be the last 2 lines of the song.

Thanksgiving Songs Flip Charts

The primary kids work 8-9 months out of the year to learn AND memorize the songs required for the annual Primary Program.  I am of the opinion (and I'm VERY opinionated) that every song they learn doesn't need to be memorized.  I have made flip charts for reverent songs to use as opening or closing songs throughout the year & the teachers REALLY appreciate them, too.

So for the "holiday" songs, I have been busy making A LOT of flip charts!  This way we can have fun singing the songs in different ways without the stress of memorizing them as well.  The kids really don't mind the extra help as long as they are engaged & enjoying the time spent singing the songs.  If we end up singing any of these in Sacrament meeting, the flip charts are small enough for me to handle easily and I try to keep the fonts large enough to be seen at a distance.

A Song of Thanks pg. 20a of the Children's Songbook is a sweet song.  Short & sweet!  This is one that I have been using this month as an opening or closing song.  I also simplified it for my early beginner piano students & they all enjoyed learning to play it at home.  One of my students came to lessons last week & when she pulled out this song to play for me she said, "We sang this song in Primary!"  They love to play songs for their Family Home Evenings, too.

I Thank Thee, Dear Father pg. 7 of the Children's Songbook is one that I chose to make a flip chart for use as an opening or closing song.  There are so many songs about gratitude in the songbook that the kids just don't know!  November is the perfect time to introduce them.

I'm Thankful To Be Me pg. 11 of the Children's Songbook was "new find" for me.  I have never heard it before & thought it's message was perfect for my Jr. Primary.  It is such a simple song with a lovely melody.  It's written a bit high for my taste, so I went to the LDS website & lowered it for our pianist.  Instead of finding pictures on the internet/websites, I thought it would be fun for the kids to draw their own pictures.  I took our family white board and some colorful dry erase markers to primary.  The first week we took the time to have a few kids draw a phrase of the song. We sang the song while I pointed to their pictures.  When Singing Time was over, I took the white board into the other room & took close up pictures of their drawings.  I uploaded the pictures to my iPhoto and then simply dragged & dropped them onto my document pages.  I added the words in large font & printed them all off on card stock paper.  For the last page, I have a 4x6 mirror with magnets on the back that I put on it to represent "ME".  Because who do YOU see when you look in a mirror? When I showed them their flip chart the next week, they were excited to see their drawings!  I even took the time to hand write the "artists" names on the back of their picture:)  I had a funky turkey hat that the teachers wore if their class sang the song the loudest or had the most participation, etc....We sang it 4 times so that all 4 teachers had the "privilege".  It was a great way to teach & learn this song in only 2 weeks!

This is a great 2 part song, similar to "A Child's Prayer".  My Sr. Primary loves 2 part songs so why not teach them a new one?  Again, this one is a bit high for my Sr. Boys, so I re-entered it into my personal computer music program & then clicked a button to transpose it.  I love my computer program:)  It also made the notes easier to read than the original copy.  I introduced this song to the Sr. Primary on the same day I introduced "I'm Thankful To Be Me" to my Jr. Primary.  So the flip chart is made from their personal drawings.  I realize that you most likely won't want to use these "white board" flip charts.  However, I wanted to show you that all flip charts don't have to be the same.  Just pray for a bit of creative inspiration that will work with your primary.  By the end of our 2nd week of singing this song, allowing the kids to mix up with others for the different parts as well as having a Sr. Boy come to the front to lead the 2nd part, they were singing with such love & volume that the bishopric could hear them clear down the hall!

I Am Glad For Many Things pg. 151 of the Children's Songbook is an oldie but a goodie!  My niece sang it in Sacrament Meeting last year, but she needed it to be a bit longer:)  So my oldest daughter & I came up with Additional Lyrics.  So there are more verses in the flip chart than what's in the songbook.  I also have used this song along with "Thanks To Our Father" to teach the kids what a Medley is.  You can read more about it here.

Thanks To Our Father pg. 20b of the Children's Songbook is a fun melody to sing.  It's not a fast song!  It's simple & you can use actions as you sing it instead of using the flip chart.  This month I started singing this song (using actions only) in Nursery Singing Time. We sing it before the closing song & it helps bring back the reverence:)

So there you have it!  Lots of Thanksgiving songs available & the kids get excited to learn them.  Even though teaching my kids these Thanksgiving songs cut into learning the Christmas songs in a timely manner, I don't regret it.  The kids had fun with them!

Search, Ponder, & Pray

This song is a great reverence song that has been used this month in Jr. & Sr. Primary.  It is found in the Children's Songbook on page 109.  I made a flip chart to use.  Our primary kids didn't really know it.  And I just can't be allotted enough time each week to teach all the wonderful songs that are available!  So I resort to the flip chart aid.  The kids don't seem to mind & willingly sing it.  Search Ponder Pray Flip Chart

If I Listen With My Heart

January 2011 is here:)  That means the time has come to start teaching your primary children the first of many songs needed for the program in the 4th quarter.  Let me just start by saying I LOVE THIS SONG!  I also got a lot of teaching helps and ideas from Kathleen's blog.  Research her blog.  She's very thorough.

I found plenty of flip charts out there for this song.  But none of them felt just right for my primary.  I made one to add to your list of choices.   If I Listen With My Heart Flip Chart 

The first week I introduced the song to the children.  I asked them to listen to the song & tell me the 3 ways we can hear the Savior's voice.  My plan was to play the CD for them to listen to.  But of course that would be too easy!  My CD player went kaput right there in Primary.  So I sucked it up and sang it to them.  Yep, if I can do it.....you can too!  I'm a piano teacher, not a vocalist.  But I survived (obviously) and I haven't heard of any children that have been permanently traumatized.  The kids closed their eyes while I sang.  That helped me:)  They were able to answer the question: scriptures, living prophet, Holy Ghost.

Then we learned the first verse.  I simply asked them questions about the pictures & likened them to them.  I made it very personal to each of them, individually.  I used sticky notes to cover the words & uncovered the key words as we went along.  They did a great job & were anxious to learn the 2nd verse.  But that will be another post:)

Have a Very Happy Birthday

With Christmas over, I thought it would be fun to spend December 26th celebrating birthdays.  I wanted to teach the primary kids a new Birthday song.  I get kinda bored with the other ones:)  So a new flip chart was born!  Have a Very Happy Birthday flip chart   This song is found in the Children's Songbook on page 284b.  I chose verses 1 & 3.  It's a very upbeat song & goes quickly!  The Jr. Primary loves the 3rd verse the best.  They like to take a moment to "blow" out the candle.

I also took time to have some fun with the other Birthday songs.  For Jr. Primary, we worked on the "You've Had a Birthday" pg. 285.  They came up with other words to replace the "wiser" word.  Many of the words weren't quite what I was looking for.  But I had a list of words that another Primary had come up with to go off of.  I then wrote each of these words on yellow strips of paper & laminated them.  One birthday child gets to choose a paper & we sing the song to them all using the word that was chosen.

For the Sr. Primary, we worked on the "Your Happy Birthday" on page 283.  Again, I had a list from another Primary to help the kids come up with 3 & 4 silly syllable words to replace "zip-a-dee-ay" and "heigh-dee-ho".  I wrote the 4 syllable words on blue strips of paper & the 3 syllable ones on red &  laminated them.  I choose 2 of the birthday kids that day to draw a blue and a red strip of paper.  We then sing the song using those silly syllable words as substitutes.  Neither of these 2 Birthday Song ideas came from my less than creative mind.  I found them online at Sugardoodle while researching for ideas:)

We had a great time that day!  It was nice to learn a new song that didn't have
anything to do with the upcoming Program for 2011.  But boy have we hit
the ground running since then!  Whew!

As I Search the Holy Scriptures

I have spent so much time trying to organize all of the Chorister material that I haven't taken the time to do much blogging since before Christmas.  This "Organizing" project is something I took on and began back in October.  Over the weeks since then, I would bring a pile of stuff home from the Primary Room closet.  I would go through it, decide if it was worth saving for future use or consider it history.  I had no idea that it would take me 3 months of non-stop attention to get it all finished!  There were a lot of flip charts that previous choristers had made.  I LOVE flip charts!  Especially for the opening and closing songs that the children don't know as well.  They can use the flip charts & bring the Spirit into the room.  Anyway, the flip charts were in folders & were kind of a mess.  I found that I like the flip charts in binders.  That way I can remove the one(s) I need and put them in my weekly binder without having to haul other song flip charts that I don't need at the time.  I always pull them out of the binder to use.

With January's theme, I wanted to sing opening and closing songs that re-enforce the value of studying the scriptures.  "As I Search the Holy Scriptures" is Hymn #277.  I uploaded it on my Scribd account & FINALLY figured out how to at least put it on this blog as well.  Just click on the link below!  Check out all the other flip charts I have available for you to download as well.  I'm a slow learner & there are quite a few charts that I don't have listed on this blog.

Christmas Singing Time

This idea was shared by Kristen @ I Sing U Sing.  She has so many wonderful ideas that I've used over the last few weeks!  I did modify it a bit to fit my primary.  Some of the songs I chose are different & therefore I needed to use different scripture references.  I'm going to use a mini Nativity set I was given when first married many years ago.  It's one that I've always allowed my girls (that's right, no boys!) to play with even when little.  I will have all of the pieces set up except for the following:

Nativity scene:  

1.  Angel- Helaman 14:2 (sing "Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus", CS 36.  Flip chart)
2.  Mary- Luke 2:15-16 (sing "The Shepherd's Carol", CS 40.  Flip chart)
3.  Jesus- Luke 2:7 (sing "Away In a Manger", CS 42.  Chime/flip chart)
4.  Shepherd- Luke 2:8-10 (sing "Stars Were Gleaming", CS 37.  Chime/flip chart)
5.  Wiseman- Matt. 2:1, 11 (sing "Picture a Christmas", CS 50. Pics/Frame)

These pieces I will place throughout the room, in plain sight.  The children will choose one to place with the other pieces of the Nativity Scene & we'll sing the song that corresponds with it.  The Sr. Primary will also read the scriptures before singing the song.

The flip chart for "Samuel Tells..." is one from another wonderful site.  I love it when people share!  The flip chart for "The Shepherd's Carol" is one that I did and you're welcome to download.  The idea I got from the website or blog linked for "Picture A Christmas" pics/frame is worth checking out, too.  I did download my own pictures, but I didn't keep a file for it.  The flip charts for the other 2 songs & one chime chart were used by former choristers in my ward & I'm reusing them.

I made the chime chart for "Stars Were Gleaming".  I only did the first verse.  The main notes are the letters above the words that are written in blue marker (it's kind of hard to tell with this picture).  The purple letters are the harmony notes that the Sr. Primary can do.  I included the notes of the last 2 measures of the song.  It just needs to have the chimes to give it a finished sound:)  

Whew!  This Christmas Singing Time should take 2 weeks accomplish.  I'm counting on it anyway:)  We're singing songs in Sacrament Meeting this Sunday as well.  So it'll be nice to sing different Christmas songs.  Have a great weekend!  Get that shopping done:)

I Need My Heavenly Father

This week I'll be teaching the children a new reverence song.  It's a short & simple one.  I made a flip chart for it anyway.  It's only 2 pages and the last page repeats the words to slightly different notes.  So, the * represents musical repeat signs.

Thanks To Our Father

I set a goal to teach the Primary children more reverence songs.  They just didn't know very many & I was getting bored with rotating through the few they knew.  And I have only been the Primary Chorister since June!

As you know, we get very little time each week to teach the children the monthly songs as directed in the yearly outline.  So how can one teach them more songs above & beyond that which is required?  The Primary Presidency helped lead the way with the answer:  Prelude Music.   Our pianist plays the reverence song I want them to sing as they are coming into Primary.  If I have a flip chart, I'll ask for helpers to hold them up front for me.  As the children (Jr. Primary only) come in, I begin singing the song (all by myself! Scary, I know.)  But then the children immediately focus on the song & join in when they feel comfortable.  This prevents the children from getting giggly with their neighbors & instantly brings the spirit into the room.  We will sing the song over & over again as we first learn it.  Repetition!  So far the songs are pretty short.  When I feel the children are focused, I have them finish the song & then turn the time over to the Primary Presidency to open with prayer.  It's been wonderful!  We've learned 2 songs so far.  The first one was so short I didn't bother doing a flip chart.  It was "Reverence" on page 27a of the Children's Songbook.  I just sang it over & over (3 or 4 times) until most kids had joined me.  We did this song for 3 consecutive weeks & they had it learned.

The first 2 weeks that we learn a reverence song, we not only sing it for prelude/opening song but we also sing in during middle exercises right before the scripture & talk is given.  This way the Sr. Primary can also learn it.

The Nativity Song

This is a flip chart of "The Nativity Song" from the Children's Songbook, pg. 52.   I finally learned how to convert it to PDF form!!  It only took me 3 weeks:(  Anyway, it is one of the 3 songs our Primary children are singing in Sacrament Meeting on Dec. 12th.  Our pianist plays the introduction only at the beginning of the song.  We cut it out between the verses to help the song move along.  The idea of the introduction was meant to be played while pictures could be swapped out between the verses.  However, no visuals are supposed to be used in Sacrament Meetings.

Giving Thanks Medley

I've been teaching the children 2 songs:  Thanks to Our Father & I Am Glad for Many Things.   So I had an idea last week.  I put the two songs together to make a medley.  I will be teaching it to the kids tomorrow!  I have a flip chart already made for Thanks To Our Father & we'll just use those for this medley.  Then I'll just have a heart with music notes on it for the 4th verse.  I'm confident they all know the 1st verse:)

I also went on the LDS Music website & copied off both songs individually.  Then I placed Thanks to Our Father under I Am Glad for Many things & re-copied it as a single page for our pianist.  This will make it easier for him to go from one song to the other & back again.  Can't wait to try it out!
